woman with healthy teethAlthough no one ever expects it to happen to them, one in six Americans will face a dental emergency this year. Often, they are the result of trauma or injury to the mouth or face; however, other times they could have been avoided. It is not uncommon for a dental emergency to occur when a weakened tooth finally breaks. To reduce your risk for an unexpected trip to your dentist in Corpus Christi, it is best to protect your enamel to keep it strong.

Reduce Your Risk for Dental Emergencies

Your enamel is the hard-outer layer that protects the inner layers of your teeth. If you do not take care to keep your enamel strong, it can increase your risk for a dental emergency due to a cavity, infection, or a broken tooth. Although you cannot fully avoid them, there are several things you can due to help prevent them by preserving your enamel.

1. Consume Less Sugar

Although everyone enjoys a sweet treat or soda now and then, the large amounts of sugar that they contain are damaging to your enamel. When the sugar combines with your saliva, it turns it to an acid, which eats away at your enamel. This will cause it to weaken over time. To prevent it, it is best to limit your consumption of sugars and starches. If you cannot, be sure to brush your teeth right away or rinse your mouth with water.

2. Promote Strong Enamel

Just as there are foods that can damage your enamel, there are also ones that can help to make it strong. It is best to choose foods that are high in calcium, which will not only keep your teeth strong, but your bones as well. Low-fat dairy products, like yogurt and cheese, are excellent sources for calcium and taste great.

3. Don’t Overbrush

Brushing your teeth too often or too aggressively will wear away at your enamel. It is best to use a soft-bristled toothbrush to gently clean your teeth and gums. Clean all surfaces of your teeth for at least two minutes twice a day.

4. Use Fluoride

Fluoride is known as “Nature’s Cavity Fighter” because it helps to strengthen the enamel before and after it has suffered from demineralization. It is recommended that you use a fluoride toothpaste when you brush your teeth. In addition, drink tap water over bottled water because it contains added fluoride.

Promote a Healthy Smile

With these 4 simple tips, you will help to keep your enamel strong to protect your teeth; however, if a problem should occur, do not wait to call your emergency dentist in Corpus Christi.
