Woman with a beautiful smile from cosmetic dentist in Corpus Christi. Few people are born with naturally flawless smiles. Thankfully, you no longer need to feel insecure about your teeth. People from all walks of life are turning to their cosmetic dentist in Corpus Christi to achieve the picture-perfect smile they desire. Although you might believe cosmetic dentistry is fairly new, elective treatments date back to ancient times; however, they have come a long way from using urine to whiten teeth. Here are just a few of the changes over the years that have made cosmetic services a popular option.

Cosmetic Dentistry Throughout History

Cosmetic dentistry emerged in modern dental care in the 1980s, but there are records dating back to 700 B.C. of Etruscans attempting to replace missing teeth. They used some strange materials to replicate lost teeth, like ivory and bone. They even tried their hand at crowns and bridges using gold. Their unusual methods were designed to make the teeth more attractive, which also including toothpastes made of pumice stone and vinegar.

Even the Ancient Romans had their own form of cosmetic services, which included urine to remove stains from teeth. Despite the ability to make the teeth whiter, there are far better options today than using a urine mouthrinse.

During Medieval Times, dentistry wasn’t considered an area of specialty. Instead, barbers filed teeth and coated them to make them whiter. Unfortunately, this led to permanent damage to the teeth.

Emerging Modern Dentistry

In the 1700s, the cosmetic dentistry industry turned to replacing missing teeth with metals by inserting them into the sockets of the teeth. They also used porcelain to create more realistic dentures. Porcelain has paved the way for modern tooth replacement options because it closely mimics enamel.

During the 20th century, the most notable changes occurred. New treatments and techniques led to a variety of options, like veneers, fillings, and dental implants. Dentists no longer use urine to combat tooth discoloration and stains. Instead, hydrogen peroxide is the go-to solution to whiten teeth.

In the 1960s, laser dentistry was invented. Not only has it led to more effective periodontal therapy treatments, but it can also be used for teeth whitening. Besides a brighter smile, new materials and techniques can correct a variety of aesthetic flaws, like chips, cracks, and missing teeth.

Among the most popular modern cosmetic treatments include:

  • ClearCorrect Braces
  • In-Office Teeth Whitening
  • At-Home Teeth Whitening
  • Tooth-Colored Fillings
  • Porcelain Veneers
  • All-Ceramic restorations
