How to Take Care of Your Dentures
March 2, 2026

Dentures are a reliable and effective solution for restoring your smile, improving speech, and making it easier to eat comfortably. Like natural teeth, however, dentures require consistent care to stay clean, comfortable, and long-lasting. Proper maintenance not only protects your investment but also supports your overall oral health.
Here’s how to take care of your dentures the right way.
Clean Them Daily
Even though dentures are not natural teeth, they still collect plaque, food particles, and bacteria. Cleaning them every day is essential to prevent stains, odors, and irritation.
Remove your dentures and gently brush them using a soft-bristled toothbrush or a denture brush. Use a denture cleanser or mild soap, not regular toothpaste, which can be too abrasive and cause tiny scratches on the surface. Scratches can make dentures more prone to staining and bacteria buildup.
Be sure to rinse them thoroughly after cleaning.
Soak Them Overnight
Most dentures need to stay moist to maintain their shape. When you’re not wearing them — especially overnight — store them in water or a dentist-recommended denture soaking solution.
Letting dentures dry out can cause them to warp, which may affect their fit and comfort. Always follow your dentist’s instructions regarding soaking products, and rinse dentures before putting them back in your mouth.
Handle With Care
Dentures are durable but not indestructible. They can break or crack if dropped. When removing or cleaning them, hold them over a folded towel or a sink filled with water to cushion any accidental drops.
Avoid bending or adjusting dentures yourself. If they feel loose or uncomfortable, schedule an appointment with your dentist rather than attempting a DIY fix.
Maintain Your Oral Health
Even if you wear full dentures, caring for your mouth remains essential. Gently brush your gums, tongue, and the roof of your mouth daily using a soft toothbrush. This stimulates circulation, removes bacteria, and helps prevent infections.
If you wear partial dentures, continue brushing and flossing your remaining natural teeth carefully.
Schedule Regular Dental Visits
Routine dental checkups are still important for denture wearers. Your dentist will examine your gums, check for signs of irritation or infection, and ensure your dentures fit properly.
Over time, your jawbone and gums naturally change shape, which can cause dentures to loosen. Periodic adjustments or relining may be necessary to maintain comfort and function.
With proper daily care, dentures can last many years and help you maintain a confident smile. Consistency is key: clean them thoroughly, store them safely, and stay in touch with your dental professional. Taking care of your dentures means taking care of your oral health, comfort, and quality of life.
